Goms Bridge

Image
The "Goms Bridge", built and opened in summer 2015, connects the two hiking areas of Bellwald and Ernen as well as the Rottenweg and the Gommer Höhenweg. At the same time, it provides Bellwald with a connection to the cantonal Gletsch-Lake Geneva cycle path and an all year-round connection to the Binntal Nature Park. The bridge which is 280-metres long and 1.40-metres wide is open all year round for hikers, wheelchair users and bicycles. For those who only want to pay a short visit to Goms Bridge, parking spaces are available in Fürgangen. We would ask everyone to use the underpass for crossing the road. If you're feeling hungry and want to digest your impressions while enjoying a drink and a snack, there are refreshment stops on both sides of the Goms Bridge.

Have You Ever Wondered... Does every oyster have a pearl?

Image
D o you like jewelry? Whether you prefer necklaces or earrings, you probably like them with diamonds, rubies, sapphires or one of the many other types of  precious  jewels. If you love necklaces, you may be a big fan of pearls, too. Do you know where pearls come from? They don't grow on trees. You can't plant them. They aren't mined out of the ground either. So where do pearls come from? Pearls come from a living sea creature: the oyster. These beautiful round jewels are the result of a  biological  process within the oyster as it protects itself from  foreign  substances. Although clams and mussels can also produce pearls, they don't do so very often. Most pearls are made by oysters, and they can be made in either freshwater or saltwater environments. As oysters grow, an internal organ called the  mantle  uses minerals from the oyster's food to produce a  substance  called  nacre .  Nacre  is the material that...

An egg has broken Kylie Jenner's record for Instagram's most-liked photo

Image
An egg has successfully dethroned Kylie Jenner as the record holder of the most-liked photo on Instagram.  An account with the handle, world_record_egg, posted a single photo of a standing egg on Jan 5, with the caption "Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this."  In the truest form of internet camaraderie, users from all around the world banded together to spread the word, join the #EggGang, and become #EggSoldiers. It was not an  *cough*  overeasy   task, and the community hatched  (bear with us here)  plans to make it work.  Their efforts were not in vain. The post has since gathered 23 million likes at the time of writing, with netizens flooding Kylie's Instagram comments section with egg emojis and the hashtag #EggGang. The previous record, held by Kylie, belonged to the first...

French Montana defends R Kelly: “Let somebody enjoy their legacy”

Image
The airing of Lifetime’s  Surviving R Kelly  docu-series has prompted several musicians and former collaborators to finally distance themselves from the controversial R&B singer. The likes of  Lady Gaga ,  Chance the Rapper , and  Phoenix  have all publicly apologized for working with Kelly and vowed never to do so again. Meanwhile, John Legend declared Kelly “ a serial child rapist. ” At least one musician is sticking by Kelly, however. TMZ caught up with rapper  French Montana  in Los Angeles over the weekend. While Montana acknowledged that Kelly is likely a sexual predator — he pointed to the lyrics in Kelly’s song “Bump N’ Grind” as evidence — Montana also said Kelly should be allowed to “enjoy [his] legacy.” “They don’t let nobody have their legendary moments. They did Michael Jackson like that, they did R Kelly like that,” Montana said. “All the greats went down like that. Let somebody enjoy their legacy. Whatever happe...

Should Apple bring the iPad Pro design to the iPhone 11 to create a modern iPhone 5? Comment

Image
As we prepare for the  iPhone 11  later this year, the first reports are starting to emerge to offer some details on the device’s features. One thing that is unclear, however, is whether or not the iPhone 11 (iPhone XI?) will usher in a new design, or feature the same edge-to-edge design of the iPhone X. With the 2018 iPad Pros, Apple reintroduced a unibody design with a more industrial look and feel. Gone are the curved edges that have long graced the iPad and are still prominent on the iPhone. The 2018 iPad Pros feature sharp edges and feel more like one piece of aluminum than before. Of course, this is a design Apple has used with the iPhone before. In many ways, the 2018 iPad Pros harken back to the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 days, where the iPhone featured a boxier design. While details on the iPhone 11’s design are unclear, one of the most common suggestions has been for App...

Steve Jobs Deathbed Speech

Image
He died a billionaire at 56yrs of Pancreatic Cancer and here are his last words on the sick bed:  "I reached the pinnacle of success in the business world. In others’ eyes my life is an epitome of success. However, aside from work, I have little joy. In the end, wealth is only a fact of life that I am accustomed to. At this moment, lying on the sick bed and recalling my whole life, I realize that all the recognition and wealth that I took so much pride in, have paled and become meaningless in the face of impending death. You can employ someone to drive the car for you, make money for you but you cannot have someone to bear the sickness for you. Material things lost can be found. But there is one thing that can never be found when it is lost – "Life". When a person goes into the operating room, he will realize that there is one book that he has yet to finish reading – "Book of Healthy Life". Whichever stage in life we are at right now, with ti...

Chinese scientist who produced gene-edited babies may be executed.

Image
In late November of last year, Chinese scientist He Jiankui revealed to the world that he had pursued a goal of genetically altering human embryos, succeeding in altering the genes of multiple babies which were then carried to term and born. It rocked the genetic science community and drew ire from many researchers around the world. Now, He may be facing a much stiffer penalty than public backlash. As  The Telegraph  reports, his unexplained “disappearance” in December was actually the result of being placed in state custody. The scientist now spends his days under armed guard as the Chinese government decides how to proceed. Depending on how officials rule, one potential outcome may be execution. His work, which was aimed at giving children of HIV-positive parents the ability to resist the disease prior to being born, resulted in at least two live births thus far. The two baby girls are reportedly healthy, but that doesn’t necessarily factor into the thinking of thos...

This Teen Translated a Bible Verse Into DNA and Injected It Into Himself

Image
Adrien Locatelli, 16, from Grenoble, France, posted a  short paper  to the Open Science Framework preprint server in which he claimed to produce strands of DNA that corresponded to verses from the Bible and the Quran. According to Locatelli, he then injected the DNA containing the Bible verses into his left thigh, and the DNA with the Quranic verses into his right thigh. “I did this experiment only for the symbol of peace between religions and science,” Locatelli told me in an email. “It’s just symbolic.” The proteins created by Locatelli are basically just short strands of DNA, which is made of nucleotides that can only be combined in specific ways. Previous research has shown that artificial nucleotides can be used to store data, such as  the key to a Bitcoin wallet , but so far they haven’t actually been injected into a person. Locatelli said he matched various characters in the Hebrew alphabet to the nucleotides in order to ...
